About this scheme
A fellowship scheme by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the single girl child for research in Social Sciences with an aim to compensate for direct costs of higher education, especially for such girls who happen to be the only girl child in their family. The objectives are to support the higher education of a single girl child in Social Sciences, recognize the value of observance of small family norms, recognize the norm of a single girl child in society, propagate the concept of the single girl child norm, and promote single girls in society.
Eligibility
- Single girl child: Must be the only girl child of her parents without any brother or sister (twin or fraternal daughters also eligible)
- PhD enrolment: Must be registered in a regular, full-time PhD program in Social Sciences at a University/College/Institute under section 2(f) and 12(b) of UGC Act, deemed universities, central/state funded institutions, or Institutes of National Importance
- Age limit: Up to 40 years for general category; up to 45 years for SC/ST/OBC/PwD
- Mode: PhD through distance education mode is not covered under the scheme
- Transgender: Transgender candidates are eligible to apply under the scheme as per norms
Benefits
- Fellowship ₹25,000 per month for the initial two years
- Fellowship ₹28,000 per month for the remaining tenure
- Contingency grant ₹10,000 per annum for initial two years
- Contingency grant ₹20,500 per annum for remaining tenure
- Escort/Reader assistance ₹2,000 per month for PwD candidates

- Affidavit on ₹50 stamp paper proving single girl child status, duly attested by SDM/First Class Magistrate/Gazetted Officer (not below Tahsildar)
